Negoro Nuri

The priests of the Negoro-dera monastery in 14th century Japan developed this style of Oriental lacquer. The object was first lacquered in black, then in red. Sometimes the red was worn back in various areas to reveal the black as a form of decoration or the red just wore off with use.
